We’re well into the swing of the year by now but if you’re anything like me I always see December as a time for indulgence, it’s like I’m a bear stocking up for the winter. I eat everything I don’t normally eat that much of the rest of the year, other than my birthday cake – generally from violets in London. (They really do do the best carrot cake.) BUT I really wouldn’t change it, its a time for sharing meals and moments with family and friends.

However my body gets overloaded with sugar, wheat, & gluten to the point where I start January feeling lethargic, my skin feels dull, I have dark circles with no jet lag to blame anymore, headaches and generally feel more emotional than normal. The time comes to give the body a little helping hand so we feel happy and healthy moving towards the new year.

You know I’m all about treating skin from within so let’s start with a good sweat, exercise, sauna, get that blood pumping and starting to flush out those toxins. Everyone starts a new exercise regime in January you may as well jump on the band wagon but try and and find something you love. If the gym fills you with dread then maybe don’t force yourself to go to one. You could find a pilates studio? or a youtube channel you can do in the comfort of your own home. Did you know that 12 per cent of gym members sign up in January, and according to the Fitness Industry Association, most people have quit or stop going after 24 weeks. Many more would probably have quit earlier if they weren’t tied up to a 6-month contract.

Go green, get loads of greens into your diet. Brussel Sprouts aren’t just for Christmas they are among the most nutritious veggies out there. They are packed with vitamins and minerals, has virtually no calories, no fat, no cholesterol, and they even fill you up. Cut them in half and sauté them in a pan, in some grass fed butter they are delicious, not a soggy sprout in sight! If you’re feeling like your body needs a detox to kickstart, a soup cleanse is a great choice, its still nutrient dense, you won’t be spiking your blood sugar like you may do in a juice cleanse, its warming and will fill you up. Allowing you to function like a normal human being without having to lie in a dark room focusing on the fact you’re starving. No one needs that in January! To save money, grab lots of veggies from the supermarket. If you go with in season local veg they will be much cheaper too. Try and make around 3 different hearty soups, portion them out to 3 a day with a couple of Veg broths or bone broths in between for 3 days. Sometimes I throw in a green juice too just to get in some extra goodness. Drink lots of water too. You’ll feel great at the end of it. On the fourth day re introduce healthy food that’s not too difficult to digest so your body doesn’t go into panic. Soupelina do a great recipe book so you can create a cleanse at home. Did you know that getting outdoors in the fresh air will help with any January blues, and moving the body will help it to detox, if you can get up a sweat then thats amazing!

If your skin feels dry, it could have something do with December festivities it normally takes around 4-6 weeks for how your tummy has been feeling to show up in your skin. Fixing the gut microbiome has been linked to a wide range of health benefits (it may, according to some studies, help lower incidence of cancer, strokes and obesity), and much of skin care is now focused on the gut as the secret to complexion perfection. You can purchase a high quality strain of probiotics to give you a little January helping hand, the jury is out on whether these actually colonise and stay but they will give you some support.  For the here and now though have a lovely double cleanse at night, (made popular by Caroline Hirons thank goodness) and use the Kyūshi Jasmine Lavender & Cedarwood face oil its slightly thicker so feels much more nourishing, pop in a drop of chamomile if your skin has broken out from those festivities. Sleep for a good 8 hours if you can, give your body time to heal and repair.

Upon waking shower rinse your face with water, wait for it to dry then apply your chosen face oil, I pop some chamomile & helichrysum on but it’s completely up to you. Allow to soak in, if you have time pop on another layer and allow to soak in again. This is my weekend ritual it’s so lovely, honestly. Glowing skin all day especially if you pop a tinted sunscreen/moisturiser on the top.

Do you know you shed almost 9lbs per year in skin cells?  Skin regenerates every 28 days and can shed around 40,000 cells each minute. How Crazy is that!

January seems to have this reputation as the month to beat yourself up, try not to fall into this trap it should be a month to be grateful for having a wonderful December, reflecting on your past year and looking forward to the year ahead. If you’re on the wellness train, you haven’t fallen off it you’re exercising your 80:20 lifestyle so for that you have succeeded. Now is the time to move back into the 80% section to give your body a helping hand, its all about balance.
