Ikigai 生き甲斐 – A Reason For Being

Ikigai is the place where your needs, desires, ambitions, and satisfaction meet; a point of perfect balance, and perfect fulfilment. This is the Japanese secret to a long and happy life. Following on from our amazing collection of Japan stories from Georgia Dorey, having read Ikigai I wanted to share the main principles with you for finding your own balance and inner peace, the Japanese way. If you already use Kyūshi then you’re already taking some moments out of your day, to slow down and find a moment to pause and breathe. This takes you to the next level, incorporating that same mentality into all moments of life.

Ikigai is seen seen as the convergence of four primary elements

– What you love / your passion
– What the world needs / your mission
– What you are good at / your vocation
– What you can get paid for / your profession

Ten rules to help anyone find their own Ikigai

– Stay active and don’t retire
– Leave urgency behind and adopt a slower pace of life
– Only eat until you’re 80% full
– Surround yourself with good friends
– Get in shape through daily, gentle exercise
– Smile and acknowledge people around you
– Reconnect with nature
– Give thanks to anything that brightens our day and makes us feel alive
– Live in the moment
– Follow your Ikigai
