How to create an Eco Conscious Skincare Routine & Lifestyle
Feeling safe in the knowledge that Rome was not built in a day. I believe that making small changes and fully integrating them into your routine, ensures you can sustain them for the long haul. Thats how we will eventually see big change. A friend of mine said to me a few days ago ‘It’s all the little choices we make that create the big change’ you may just be beginning your journey, already making changes or fully immersed in creating a conscious beauty routine. I want to share some of my favourite products and simple ideas with you.
Do you love a cotton pad? – try the reusable Tabitha Eve ones. They are my favourites, you do need enough for daily use so you can use and wash.
Are you on the face wipe train? Whilst they may seem really handy, the functionality of them are actually quite low and they can just push dirt around your face rather than actually cleansing, keep your face wipes as eco as you can and save them for festivals, or stuck on a desert island – I remember visiting a friend in her family home in Ireland and they had a giant pile of clean face cloths in a beautiful wooden basket next to the sink in the bathroom, enough to use and wash. I LOVE this idea, most people go wrong by reusing the same face cloth for multiple days in a row.
If a face cloth doesn’t float your boat I also love a Konjac Sponge, it provides a super gentle exfoliation and stimulates blood flow, they are naturally loaded with minerals and vitamins. They are also sustainably produced & fully biodegradable. The Konjac Sponge Company is great.
If you’ve invested in all these beautiful reusable items then you wash them in harsh detergents, there will always be residue left on the fibres which then not only make there way onto your skin which could cause irritations but more chemical burden on our water systems.
There are some amazing new emerging brands on the market. Some tried and tested brands we love are:
BioD
GreenScents
Eco Egg – LOVE
Clean your sink, bath and shower with eco conscious cleaning products, there will be remaining residue post cleaning which you don’t want transferring to your skin next time you take a bath or fill the sink to wash your face.
I think we’ve all seen the iconic photo of the seahorse wrapped around a plastic cotton bud by Justin Hofman. Which lead to these being banned. I love the Bamboo cotton buds.
A big shift you can make is doing your research and choosing eco conscious brands when selecting your skincare and beauty products.
Choosing products formed of natural ingredients not only means your lowering your personal toxic burden your also lowering the amount of potential hormone disrupters and carcinogens being washed back into the water system when used or removed.
A simple swap is switching a plastic bottle of shower Gel for a bar of Soap. I haven’t tried them yet but check out Haeckels new innovative ocean cleanse product here
Swap a plastic disposable razor for a safety razor, there are so many on the market now that don’t look as scary as they sound.
Something really quite simple we can all pledge to do is ensuring we recycle our products when they’re finished or take advantage of refillable schemes, we’ve all been guilty of making the right choice at the checkout but how many of us have accidentally thrown it in the wrong bin, or trusting a hotel or workplace to recycle for us.
What are we doing at Kyushi?
Our packaging and raw ingredients are consciously sourced, recyclable and we are mindful of our carbon footprint. Having done some in depth research into recycling cosmetic packaging often the size of the part isn’t recognised by the scanner so it can cause problems within the recycling process. So many of my wonderful regular customers ask what they can do with their empties, being a small company still unfortunately we don’t have the capacity to turn used bottles around. However I’m super excited to have teamed up with Terracycle which means all you have to do is send empty bottles back to a return address, they all go into one of their recycling bins and when the bin is full off they go to be recycled, every single part. If you send back 4 empty bottles you will get a free bottle of Kyushi Face Oil for your commitment to making the change. Make sure you subscribe to learn more.
Something else to be mindful of is to use fewer products, check out this mindful moment on how to reduce your regime and really select your core favourites to avoid a bathroom full of wasted money and barely used products.
If you find a product you love, tell your friends and family. Even a small swap makes a huge leap forward in building a product conscious future, Rome wasn’t built in a day after all. Why not start this Christmas, support small eco conscious brands and help your loved ones make some small changes.
