What Does Holistic Skincare Mean?

Do you hear the word holistic and immediately think thats definitely a load of woo woo? If Yes, I totally understand. Unfortunately the word holistic does have that connotation. But holistic skincare, treatments and practitioners really are quite different.

Let’s first think of it in terms of facials, a traditional treatment may focus on one particular skincare brand, whilst I am far from bashing a traditional facial often it can consist of a 10 step method or routine that is carried out client to client, and whilst that one particular brand may be amazing for some people it may not be perfect for yours. A holistic approach is dealing with the body as a whole. Using a variety of products, techniques and tools specially designed to treat you and your individual needs. This can also be called a bespoke facial. The therapist will hand pick a variety of products from different brands to have in stock and hand pick them according to you and your needs. Nothing woo woo about that right?

Holistic Skincare not only looks at your skin but the big picture and finding the root cause of what may be causing particular issues on or within the skin. A practitioner may work alongside other professionals or with other treatments such as reflexology or acupuncture to help balance the body.

When searching for the root cause it can be a team effort taking into account your diet. You may eat certain foods that the body and triggering a reaction on your skin, this could appear as things like acne, psoriasis, dermatitis, rosacea or dullness. You may be asked to keep a skincare journal, this is where you write down all the foods and drinks you consume during the day, how the make you feel and ask yourself how your skin is feeling today? And write that down.

For example you can also write down how you slept, rate your stress levels, did you get hot and sweaty or stand out in the cold wind? By keeping a track, over time a pattern will start to emerge and you’ll be able to link certain foods, drinks or lifestyle events to breakouts, taking back control over your skin.

Taking a closer look at your skincare, are there any products that are disrupting your skin and therefore causing an imbalance? Have a look at this mindful moment to learn more about which ingredients to watch out for.

By choosing a holistic approach you know your practitioner is taking a step back and taking into account the big picture of your health and lifestyle and will work to bring the body back into balance.
