My Skin is struggling, is it just Dirty?
Nope (but carry on reading)
We are fed through the media that ‘imperfect skin’ means it is dirty or there is something wrong with us in order to sell you targeted overly stripping harsh skincare, but actually if we take a giant step back and have a look at the whole body there’s always a solution.
Step One.
Put the Scrubs, Foams, Acids down, back away, back right away. When we see something we don’t like our immediate reaction is to attack scrub It off, melt it off burn it off. If your skin is struggling the first thing to do approach with kindness. You have a layer on the top of your skin called the acid mantle this mantles job is a layer of protection, and keeping the eco system that is your skin happy. When this is compromised that’s when the walls are down and it leaves the skin prone to breakouts, sore areas & dryness. Lets work on repairing the acid mantle with gentle restorative products put anything skin stripping away.
Write down your skincare routine, sometimes we just put things on without thinking and through habit. Next to each product write down what it does for your skin, is it cleaning, is it brightening is it exfoliating, is it hydrating? Check its balanced, and remember its time to pair back and make it simple.
Send me an email if you’re struggling with all this info on and I’m happy to help.
Step Two
How are you?
The very British reply here is ‘I’m fine thank you’ even if you’re not. Are you feeling mentally stressed? If no, are you feeling physically stressed?
Physical stress can be less apparent and caused by an underlying bacterial or viral infection which can throw your internal eco system off which of course then effects the eco system on your skin.
A few things to look at:
Are you getting a good night of restful sleep (Ignore if you’re trying to keep a tiny human alive)
Is your energy stable throughout the day?
Do you experience fluctuations in mood?
Step Three
How are you nourishing your body?
How has your diet been lately? are you getting in lots of leafy vegetables, good fats, good protein? Basically are you having a balanced nutrient dense diet?
Processed foods, sugar, refined carbohydrates, alcohol and ‘bad’ fats (that’s your damaged processed under high heats fats - really important to avoid) all disrupt the eco system of the whole body including the skin. If your skin is struggling try and cram in as many nutrient dense foods that you can in the day, and don’t forget to hydrate.
Step Four
Help mobilise any toxins in the skin and get nutrient filled blood to the area
Lymphatic drainage watch here
Gua Sha facial massage
Get moving, a brisk walk, a jog, yoga, gardening - anything to get the blood pumping around the body.
As you can see struggling skin is not simply that you’re not washing your face properly there are literally 1000s of things that could be contributing to it, the best place to start is to take a deep breath and remember your body is never trying to attack itself this is a way of signalling to you for help.
