MUSCLE TESTING

Also known as Nutrition Response Testing and Kinesiology.

Although Muscle Testing, Kinesiology, and Nutrition Response Testing are all one of a similar thing there are subtleties that exist between all of them. These exist in the sense of how they are performed and some of the points stimulated and nervous system interactions used. This aside, the aforementioned therapies along with ART (Autonomic Response Testing) have all developed from the practice of Applied Kinesiology. This is a non invasive method of analysing the body in order to determine the underlying causes of ill health. When these are corrected through appropriate natural and nutritional means the body can repair itself in order to attain an optimum level of health.

Although below (for anyone interested) I am going to go on and explain the scientific basis to you, this method of assessment and treatment is certainly a case of you have to ‘see it’ or maybe more aptly in this case ‘feel it to believe it’. The reason for this is that firstly it will be very different to anything you have seen or felt before. In addition it is probably rooted from a very different mind set and approach to anything you have been told before (but most things we do at Kyūshi are, we have tried it other ways believe me). To put it as simply as we can Kinesiology Muscle Testing (we will refer to it as muscle testing from now) is done by testing the bodies Autonomic Nervous System (the part of the nervous system that is subconscious and coordinates all of our vital functions from breathing to digesting food etc). By applying pressure to different points of the body we can asses the amount of energy with in parts and organs of the body and also find out what nutritional substances give energy and at the same time find out what stressors (something that places extra stress on the body) take away from the body. By doing this we can get a comprehensive view of what you body is up against and more importantly it really helps with us selecting the right treatments and nutritional plans to restore your health.

In fact my whole journey in to this realm of functional medicine and true health and wellbeing came due to my own personal experience with muscle testing. After finishing work on a project I would often feel a bit lethargic and not have my usual brightness. Normally after a couple of weeks of good sleep, good nutrition, and some light exercise I would be back to my perky self. However after one particular Movie, I was probably finding I was getting worse. After receiving my “Perfect” comprehensive lab results and being told I was the epitome of ‘Health’ I strangely didn’t feel any better. I looked up various different types of Dr’s and found this one Chiropractor close to where I was staying at the time who did Kinesiology. Without much hope, I really didn’t expect anything I will be honest, science was my world at this point. Unless something had been proven in a Double blinded, Randomised Controlled Trial (a study with a super robust methodology) I wasn’t really interested at this point. One thing I did know at this point was that few people looked after their health the way I did, and how did my labs say I was perfect but I could feel so far from it. With one visit to him and being given a couple of different natural remedies to treat a parasitic infection that he found I was feeling much, much better after 72 hrs. It took a few more sessions and time to heal before I got my full sense of Health and Wellbeing back fully but it was all down to this method of assessment and treatment. I knew at this point that I wanted to be able to help people in the same way (that Jerry had helped me). So I researched places to get trained and off I went.

SO HOW DOES THIS WORK?

We basically test what we term a ‘Muscle Lock’. This is where the subconscious nervous system will automatically cause a slight muscle contraction to maintain the length/position of a muscle. Think of it similar to when you go to the Dr and he taps the tendon below the knee with a hammer to check your reflex and the leg kicks. This is very similar in the way it is testing. If the nervous system is working efficiently and has good energy then there will be a good solid ‘muscle lock’. If the Nervous system is not functioning efficiently or If something is draining the body from energy then the Muscle lock might not be present, or we might get to an organ where the ‘lock’ disappears because that organ is under significant stress. Where people get confused with this testing is that they see it is a strength test when it really couldn’t be any further from this. It is a test of the function of the nervous system and the lighter the touch used the more sensitive the testing becomes (again 'feel it to believe it’ moment). It then becomes slightly different from there as we start to apply light pressure etc to certain areas of the body such as over certain organs. When it comes to this phase we are looking in to what causes a change and it doesn’t necessarily mean that the reflex present is good and not present is bad. As far as the science goes we are looking in the energetic and/or electromagnetic fields of the body and how these subtle energies interact with the electromagnetic field of our body. Every cell in the body has an electromagnetic field, the groups of these cells will contribute to the electromagnetic field of the organ, the collective electromagnetic fields of the organs will contribute to the electromagnetic field of the body. If we introduce something inside the bodies electromagnetic field that is an existing stress to the body than we can have a negative impact on the function of the body and its nervous system because the stress of that additional electromagnetic field overwhelms the nervous system. Likewise if we place something that is going to help the body to process that substance or provide the right vitamins, minerals, proteins etc then this will have a positive effect on the body. Again like everything else we do here at Kyūshi; we are not using this method to diagnose and treat disease. We are finding the areas of ‘dys-ease’ and altered function within the body once we find these and improve them the body tends to take care of the rest.
