How to form ethically, environmentally and nourishing relationships.
Welcome to the Kyushi pillars, each week I discuss the areas of holistic wellness I believe to be crucial in getting glowing healthy skin from the inside out. (Alongside some great products of course) Lets begin…
How We Exist in the World
As we work our way around the circle of Life (Link below to download and join in) this week we land on our relationships. How we interact with other people and other things have the ability to either raise or lower our vibration. By surrounding ourselves with those people or using products / services that have the same values we have, is providing us with the nourishment we need. You will know the feeling you get when you’re with a low frequency person, this doesn’t mean introverted, you can be quiet and super high vibe. Low frequency is someone who thrives off negativity. If we look into the world of business its those who don’t take into account the wellbeing of the workforce, the environment or in the beauty industry they could choose to test on animals. If you’re using a product in which humans, animals and the planet have all been exploited and mistreated that product is going to be low vibe, it simply carries a low frequency. So have a little think about what it is you align with and try and surround yourself with an environment that supports you and supports your natural frequency or even better raises it.

The Products We Use
As I said above, discovering your values is a great place to start. I’ll share mine, I believe every single person along the chain of manufacturing a product should be treated with kindness and paid fairly. I believe that no animals including their homes should be harmed in the process. I believe we need to look after our environment, thinking about our packaging and being as environmentally conscious as we can. One of my favourite companies I’ve worked with is a company called re:wrap they make the beautiful Kyushi tote bag. I fell in love with their values immediately.
Let me share with you beautiful re:wrap process.
‘Seed-to-Shop’ is a relationship between the farmer, re-wrap and buyer. A practice based on ethical and fair trade principles to support and sustain every link in our supply chain. Farmers are paid a premium for their produce and all the other suppliers benefit from a fair trade price and compliance support. The Seed-to-Shop process is traceable all the way from sowing of the cotton seed, to sewing of the product, until it reaches the shop.
Every re-wrap product is made by rural women’s collectives in India. We actively employ women coming from marginalised backgrounds and train them in traditional sewing skills to help them gain economic independence. Many of our incredible women are sole income earners for their families and they value working with re-wrap not only for the above average living wage but for the skills they develop and the community support they gain from working with other like-minded women.
We pre-finance and mentor local farmers to adopt Regenerative Farming practices to help them survive unpredictable climate conditions.
A dedicated team of professionals assist the FPO & farmers through all the Organic methodology which includes Watershed Conservation & Management Reduction of input costs, Soil Health Conservation, Bio Diversity. The farmers are guided at every stage for implementation of best practices to become compliant. Our assistance helps them all around and enables them survive by protecting their earnings, improving their welfare and gradually become climate resilient.Organic cotton is grown without harmful chemicals, leaving the soil, air and water free from contamination. It produces around 46% less CO2 compared to conventional cotton and uses far less water to grow since it is rain fed. We aim to educate our farmers in ways that work with nature and not against it. The transition to Organic farming using regenerative techniques is the best review of our cotton production process, both socially and environmentally.

I’m sure you can see now why I love this company, of course shipping from India isn’t ideal for the environment but the bags travel by sea which takes quite a long time but its so much better than travelling them by air. Knowing that each bag is full of nothing but love and kindness from the earth itself, to the farmer, to the women making them all the way to me paying a fair price for this incredible service and forming a beautiful relationship.

Physical Nourishment
Our relationship with food, (speaking to you as a woman who grew up in the 90s & 00s) was that skinny was best, all the magazine cover girls were super skinny, gosh even the eyebrows were skinny. RIP those over plucked brows that never made a come back. We were still in a time where low fat was everywhere, fat was bad, fat would 100% make you fat. But our old friend sugar - we were encouraged go to town on that. Processed foods also a ok - easy quick fits into our busy lives.
Heres a fun fact for you, margarine is only one carbon molecule away from being classed as plastic and its actually black, its dyed yellow. Enough to put you off your morning toast & Margarine right?
With regards to the vegan spreads/butter substitutes I encourage you to read the labels check the ingredients, and just a note that if organic cold pressed oils are heated above their smoke point they become rancid and toxic to the body (This means your body has to work really hard to remove the free radicals from your system). Really important to do your own research and find what works best for you.
Since then we’ve learnt or are in the process of learning that actually good fats (i’m not taking crisp and dry) are actually extremely important in the health of our cells, our nerves and basically our whole body - Did you know that on average 50% of our cell membranes are fat (depending on the cell type) our brain and nervous system are wrapped in fat as an insulating protective sheath. Approximately 80% of our nervous system is made from fat (brain included)
So today I encourage you if you haven’t already, start to dig a little deeper switch your perspective and perhaps challenge what you’ve been taught. Know that in order to protect your body from all the scary diseases it needs fat. It needs a beautifully balanced diet but switching that relationship with fat can be so so difficult when for most of your life you were told fat is bad.
Some great options include obviously depending on your diet, any cold pressed oil drizzled on top of meals, grass fed butter, coconut oil, ghee, ethically sourced avocado oil/ Check the smoke point for any oil you choose to cook with as you don’t want to be consuming damaged fats.
Nuts, seeds, coconut milk, nut butters, avocados (ethically sourced) fish, meats, cheese, MCT oil, cacao butter.
Mind Nourishment
This week I finished ‘The Panic Years’ whilst this book probably appeals to women between 20s - mid 40s I kind of want everyone to know about it. Its another one along with Period Power that really should be part of the curriculum. It left me feeling both slightly terrified but incredibly empowered. The book takes you on the author Nell Frizzell’s journey as she reaches that time where all the questions come to the surface, do I want children, is the person I’m with the person I want to have children with? is my career what I want to be doing?have I done everything I want to do? Do I have enough money? Any of these ringing true with you? Honestly it was so fascinating she brings to the surface everything we’re thinking, with honest hilarious brutal truth telling. As someone knee deep in the panic years I really recommend it.
Any skin or general wellness questions I’m here and happy to help, simply send an email to alice@kyushi.co.uk.
Sending Love
